PROPERTIES OF BRASS Solid brass and brass-plated hardware is highly polished after fabrication, and subsequently coated with a lacquer that prevents tarnishing [oxidization]. After time, and with frequent use of hardware, the depreciation caused by handling and exposure can deteriorate its' surface veneer. Inevitably, tarnishing of hardware will occur, especially when a piece is exposed to the elements. This effect is not a product flaw, but a normal process that can vary in effect as a result of climate, pollution, humidity, UV rays, and subjection to salt.
For hardware that is mounted outdoors, it is advisable to take additional measures to protect the varnish, such as periodic applications of car wax. This is especially important in geographic regions where frequent rain or extreme environmental pollutants are prevalent.
SOLID BRASS REFINISHING Oxidization will gradually dull the glow of a solid brass piece, permanently, even with regular care. The original burnished effect can be restored to the brass by scrupulously stripping off all remaining traces of laquer, and then polishing the piece until the luster is revived. Afterwards, a layer of clear, high-gloss varnish can be reapplied to the metal to protect the metal. |
MAINTENANCE With the right care, brass products can last a lifetime. Be sure to clean your hardware using only clean water; never use harsh abrasives or detergents of any kind, especially those containing ammonia. After using a damp rag to wipe the surface clean of any dirt or grease, polish the brass with a soft, dry cloth to prevent watermarks. |
