What Can Go Wrong

In our 32 years experience, we have learned what can go wrong when exterior doors and windows are not manufactured and finished as required by our west coast environment.
This example is a result of extended lack of maintenance (17 years). This treatment was exacerbated by an extreme southwest exposure to sun, rain, and salt, as well as a minimal overhang.
This window had no protective overhangs, and the sash was not finished before glazing. It was also improperly glazed and exposed to a sprinkler system that kept it wet all summer.
This photo shows the result of a sash modified for new hardware. The exposed wood was left raw, causing it to absorb moisture, resulting in the decay evident at the tenon.
